It is a well-known factor that today we are living in a technological world. Humanity has advanced technology in the past century faster than ever before in human history. The trend continues in this century, and we can not simply forget about the importance and the impact technology is having on our day to day life. From all the technologies, computer technologies have integrated to our social structures than any other in today's world. Computer literacy is becoming a must-have skill in today's society.
Computer technology is very important to the future of Sri Lanka too. Our neighboring Asian countries have claimed so much economic gains by taking advantage of the demand for computer products and services. In Sri Lanka, we have many individuals who show very much talent in this area. This makes proper computer technology education programs very important to bring economic growth to the country. With that in mind, Lak Daruwo also educates our children on computer-related technologies.
One must not misunderstand the purpose of our computer technology education program. We completely understand that not all the children want to become computer professionals. However, computer literacy is a must for Lak Daruwo children. Although there are many private computer courses in the country, most of them are either expensive or fail to give the right kind of knowledge to the students. Computer access is still extremely limited in most of the village areas in Sri Lanka. Many government sponsored computer facilities in villages are doomed to failure because of improper implementation. Although some schools in the villages have computer facilities, these schools lack proper instructors and maintenance of those facilities. All these factors make Lak Daruwo computer technology program very important to our children.
Once we establish a computer facility, we train students and teachers how to maintain computers with minimal assistance. A set of students is being trained in the computer hardware and software fields and typical maintenance and proper usage of the computer facilities so that they can get the maximum usage out of the facilities we provide them.
Lak Daruwo children are taught computers both in formal and informal ways, and the approach is highly practical. They are always encouraged to use the PCs in their studies. English education is integrated with the computer education and, in the language learning task, computer-based activities are introduced when ever possible. A team of young volunteers are being trained as student facilitators, and they have already started the task of educating the younger students in the computer class.
All the children are given basic computer training and lessons to make them computer literate. However, we also identify those who show special interest in the technology and those who show exceptional talent using computers. These talented children are sometimes directed to reputed outside institutions to complete their education.
Lak Daruwo children have achieved a very good progress in using computers. At the moment we use computers mostly in conjunction with the English education program. Children prepare multimedia presentations based on the research projects conducted as part of there assignments, using computers. We have also started teaching web design techniques and programming in some of the centers.
We have plans to hold technology workshops with the help of universities in the future. We are already working with the Computer science faculty of University of Moratuwa to arrange such programs. These programs will help Lak Daruwo children exposed to more computer technologies.
Lak Daruwo has no plans to give higher education in computer technology. However, we will expose children to computer technologies in their young age. This will make them to be more sufficiently proficient in this "must-know" technology when they are ready to pursue their higher studies.
Other extra curricular activities:
We also conduct many extra curricular activities not essentially educational. They serve various purposes shaping the lives and attitude of the children; so we consider them essential to the proper growth of these children.
Most of these activities promote the team spirit and harmony among children. They also show and train them to help others who need assistance.
We will soon provide in this web site the details of some of the activities we have conducted.
