Lak Daruwo center at Sri Bodhiraja Vihara was started as a result of a meeting our
strategy team had with Ven. Soratha Thero at Houston Buddhist Vihara in 2002.
After starting our pilot program at Attanagalla, we wanted to expand our effort
in helping rural children in Sri Lanka. The dedication of the head priest and the
experience he has in the area of education were among the main reasons for us to
select this location to start our second Lak Daruwo center. Since we did not have
developed a selection criterion at the point in time, we selected 25 students based
on the performance in their schools. With these children, we started an English language
teaching program in the center. An instructor was selected from a good school situated
in the city of Matale. One of the main problems we had was the lack of building
facilities to conduct the programs. Currently, we use a small open hut to conduct
English language classes. Lak Daruwo also installed a computer in the temple and
provided some English learning software to assist this program.
