Lak Daruwo recently concluded a very successful English camp in Sankapala Rajamaha Viharaya in Embilipitiya. It was our first effort in holding English camps and it bought a lot of success and taught us many lessons to make these activities better for the children.
The English camp was conducted by three students from Great Britain who are in Sri Lanka as volunteer teachers though the organization called Project Trust. They have been conducting English education programs in many parts of the world including Sri Lanka and were ready to assist Lak Daruwo to conduct a pilot program we call an "English Camp". The idea was to gather selected children from each center in one center and keep them in for several days and engage them in activities that mainly involve learning English language.
For our first program we selected about 36 students from three of our centers. They all came to our Embilipitiya center with their English teachers and a mother from each center to look after the need of girls in the program. They spend four nights in the center only with their friends and teachers. Each day was started with a session of meditation to improve the concentration and followed by a session of physical exercises that will boost the energy throughout the day. Then the three instructors with our teachers conduct the day program which includes many English learning team activities. The whole program was conducted in English and no one was allowed to use the native language during these activities. Especially since the instructors could only speak English this was more effective. The instructors were university students so the children fell more comfortable around them and treated them like friends when playing games, having meals and during bonfire at night. This program included many fun activities though which Lak Daruwo children had the chance to improve English skills, work as teams and get to know and work with each other as in a family.
The program was concluded with a session of presentations and an award ceremony. Mr. Anurudha Kulathunga of Lak Daruwo Stratergy team and our national coordinator Mr. Sanjeewa Samaranayake attended the last day of this event. During the four days of staying together our children who even have not met each other before got to know each other so much, it was extremely emotional time when they had to finally say bye to each other at the end of the program. This type of events also help us to build harmony and togetherness among children and be like a family without divisions. This is essential to the progress of Sri Lanka.
We will have more detail information about this event and some thought from the children soon in our web site.
