Progress by end of year 2003

By the end of year 2003, Lak Daruwo has been conducting its educational programs for almost an year in Embilipitiya center. Due to the extreme level of difficulties faced by the people in this area, Lak Daruwo team had to work very hard to help the children in this center. The challenges this center bought us were different from what we experienced at our Attanagalla center. However, the team at Embilipitiya center including Nagitha thero, has dedicated so much for the program. We see very admirable progress at this center, considering the difficulties both the children and the management experience there.

Today the children of this center have formed a team called "Lak Daruwo Society" and participate in many educational and social activities. These activities promote team work and leadership qualities in these children. This kind of undivided team spirit seems essential for building a strong society for our country.

In December 2003, this center hosted its first Lak Daruwo Year End Presentations Event. Children, their parents, Lak Daruwo team, several invitees from the area, and journalists participated in this event. All the students from Lak Daruwo Meegammana Center also took part in this event. The program was a great success, and we observed a great deal of improvement in the children. Every student participated in at least one performance and the whole event was conducted through English. Senior and middle groups made presentations based on small research projects they had conducted.

Drama performed in English by Students
These groups used latest multimedia computer technologies to present these items. A year ago, when we started the Lak Daruwo center, only a very few children from the whole group had the ability to come to the stage and talk in English. However, now more than 90% of them have the ability to do the same in front of a big audience without stage fear and hesitation. Also, they have achieved a lot in the technology front. With the help and guidance of Lak Daruwo network, today these children are doing things they never imagined a year ago.
