Many of the Lak Daruwo children ( about 30% as of year 2003 ) already receives scholarships from the program started and managed by Ven. Rahula Basnagoda Thero ( Lak Daruwo trustee ) of Houston Buddhist Vihara, U.S.A. These scholarships are awarded to children mainly based on their financial condition, and it helps them in many ways to support their education. The amount of money given to the children is based on the school year of the student. Currently all the sponsors of this program live in U.S.A., mainly in Houston and surrounding areas.
In addition, Lak Daruwo network has decided to start a new scholarship program, beginning from January 2004, to reward talented and hardworking students based on their performance. We believe that this kind of a scholarship program will encourage children and motivate them to continue working hard to yield better results.
We are planning to get sponsors for this program from Sri Lanka. The yearly cost to give a child a scholarship is currently set to Rs. 3600. A child will receive Rs. 300 a month to cover educational expenses. We also encourage the children to save a portion of this money to be used in the future. Although only Sri Lankans can participate directly in the program (we will make exceptions to this rule case by case), Sri Lankan expatriates can also help this program by referring their friends and family in Sri Lanka to sponsor children.
