Attanagalla belongs to the Gampaha district, which is considered as one of the best
areas in the country to live. Urban dwellers and the people from the various other parts
of the country settle down in Gampaha realizing this is the best place to live .The reason
is Gampaha still remains a village while consisting of all the facilities you can get in
a suburban area. Gampaha people are gifted with a pleasant atmosphere, good climate, and
clean water resources and sweetest of the fruits. According to the Elu Attanagalu Wansa,
even the king Sirisangabo stopped here due to the very reasons.

Bataleeya is a small village in the Gampaha district but famous throughout Sri
Lanka because of the cashew nuts and also because of the beautiful Kajuliyo
(cashew damsels.) The cashew nut is grown in many parts of the country but it
is never presented in a grand festivity like in Bataleeya. In Any time of the
year a row of beautiful girls clad in bright cheeththa and Hetta offers you the
best of the cashew nuts in the country. They start their job in the morning and
brighten the Colombo-Kandy road until the late hours. People love to stop here
to quench their thirst with a king coconut and to buy a packet of cashew nuts
to become a part of this celebration.

Most of the women here are housewives. After the heavy morning work, they
engage in small-scale home industries to contribute a little more to the family.
Making beedi-a cheap home made cigarette of an Indian origin, is one such famous
industry in the area.

Growing rice is not done in a grand scale here, like in Anuradhapura and
Polonnaruwa areas but almost every family possesses at least a small field
of rice. Most of the production is for the family consumption.

The best pineapples of SriLanka ripen in Belummahara, Gampaha. In Attanagalla
area also pineapple is grown in a grand scale. Pineapple yards densely crowded
with the famous yellow fruit is a common sight here.

Attanagalla oya, the stream of life
Oya means a stream, which is smaller than a river, in Sri Lanka. Attanagalla
oya flows through the area soothing the eyes and giving life to the village.
Miniature waterfalls add beauty to the oya from time to time. Many people make
their living by collecting sand from the oya for building purposes.
